Prickly Feelings

Recently, I’ve had this feeling of something lodged in my throat similar to the feeling of holding back a sob. There’s so much tension in my chest that it feels like a seed has been planted in me. I made some heavy decisions this month and ever since then this feeling has grown. I imagine it as this seed that has sprouted a tangle of thorny vines. What started as a couple of doodles has slowly formed into a series of illustrations separate from my traditional work. These illustrations are raw and unfiltered. Typically there is some thumbnail kind of process for my work but these came out so loosely that I had no time to overthink the layout or the color placement. (Below are a few illustrations from the zine I created out of leftover sheets from my student’s project. Maybe one day I’ll share the full zine.)

dcaz fest 2025✴︎

On June 21st, 2025 I travelled to the Jacksonville Downtown Main Library to attend one of my all time favorite events, the Duval Comics and Zines Fest! I had the privelege of designing one of their posters a few years back and I’ve been attending every chance I get. Most times I stay home but this is the one time I come out of my shell to see old friends and occassionally make new ones. I made my mandatory visit to the risograph section so I could make a print with Andy (@andrew.kozlowski), pictured below. Then I walked around to see all of the different vendors and there were so many this year that they split the event between two floors which I greatly appreciated. I love how big the event is getting and the variety of activities that they offer. One day I’ll work up the courage to table but for now I’ll continue to support as many artists as I can.
